Sutter Health recently purchased 27 acres of undeveloped land from IKEA in eastern Dublin, but it has not yet committed publicly to a plan for the property.
Located at Hacienda Drive and Martinelli Road, the land was bought for $57.5 million, as first reported by the East Bay Times.
“Sutter Health has a longstanding commitment to serving the Tri-Valley area,” a Sutter Health spokesperson told the Pleasanton Weekly. “This latest investment in Dublin gives us the opportunity to thoughtfully evaluate how to best meet the evolving healthcare needs of residents as the community continues to grow.”
The site was previously owned by IKEA, which planned to build a 317,000-square-foot IKEA store and 93,000-square-foot commercial center for additional retailers and restaurants. IKEA last year backed out of the plan, approved by the Dublin City Council in 2018, amid the company’s shift toward smaller-scale storefronts – the retailer opened one such store in June in Pleasanton.
The acreage was most recently assessed as being worth over $56.2 million. Sutter Health did not publicly disclose the purchase price. The exchange took place officially between IKEA Property Inc and Sutter Bay Hospitals, according to the Alameda County Clerk-Recorder’s Office.
Dublin deputy city manager Hazel Wetherford said the city does not know what Sutter Health plans for the land and it has not received any related documents.
A Sutter Health development at the Dublin site would join its other Tri-Valley locations such as the open Dublin Infusion Center and Livermore Care Center as well as four upcoming sites in Dublin and Pleasanton.
