San Ramon Valley Unified School District Superintendent Rob Kessler has been appointed by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell to serve on a newly created statewide Autism Advisory Committee. The committee is part of a larger effort to develop strategies for helping California children diagnosed with autism.
“I am pleased with the appointment,” said Kessler. “This will give me the opportunity to help create broader policy and effect positive change to support autistic children and their families in our own community as well as California as a whole.”
The purpose of the Autism Advisory Committee is to develop recommendations to identify how schools can better serve autistic students and their parents. These recommendations will include strategies for connecting educational institutions with the latest research and outreach services available. The committee will include parents of children with autism, school district administrators, teachers and other educators, autism research specialists and other medical professionals.
Members will conduct their first meeting in late February in Sacramento, with recommendations due in November.
