Score one for the four-against-four soccer games held last night at Dougherty Valley High.
The games raised approximately $8,000 to support cancer awareness in general and Brianne “Breezy” Bochenek in particular. The sister of an alumni member, 10-year-old Bochenek was recently diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, in one of her legs.
Alum Grant Matsumoto, along with other fellow soccer alumni members, and Varsity Head Coach Omar Cervantes put together the first-ever one day, four-on-four soccer games to raise money for the girl’s medical care. A competitive soccer player, Breezy is currently going through extensive chemotherapy treatments and is spending many hours driving to and from Stanford Hospital.
Sixty-two teams signed up for the event, paying $100 per team to play, with teams ranging from 9-year-olds to 18-year-olds. A separate alumni game was held at 6 p.m. Volunteers also sold concessions and some teams even donated additional funds.
“We were very fortunate, everybody there thought it was a fun day for a good cause. Everything has been very positive,” said Tournament Organizer Renee Matsumoto.
On Jan. 7, soccer players will hold a Juggle-A-Thon, taking donations per juggle, with players getting five attempts to juggle a soccer ball as many times as they can without letting it touch the ground, and taking the total of my three highest juggles of those five.
If, for example, a person donates $1 per juggle and the player juggles the ball five time in his or her first attempt, four in the second and five in the third, the donation would be $14.
