The “Totally Trains” exhibit is now at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley, and roving reporter Stan Wharton stopped by the opening to ask: What train ride experience can you recall? Click on the photos to see the answers.
Ally Tegner & Brady Campbell, SRVHS sophomore and Rancho Romero elementary 2nd grader (cousins): When I was in Stone Valley MS and Brady was in kindergarten we went with our family on a train to the mine on the mountain in Silver City above Virginia City. It was cool to see the beautiful scenery and the silver mine, even though the train broke down for a short time. Brady also took a train trip from Martinez to old town Sacramento and got to see the train museum.
Allison and Brady Gagnon, mom and preschooler: We went on the Casey Jr. train at Disneyland. On our way around we got to see lots of animals, which Brady really liked, especially the giraffes. We can’t wait till he’s older when we can all take longer train trips together.
Anna, Karen and Andrew Gustafson, St. Isidore kindergartener, mom and son: We went from Sunol to Niles on the Niles Canyon RR train with all the lights at Christmas. Inside the train there was a light hanging from the ceiling shaped like the earth, and it kept changing colors. It was really beautiful. Santa also rode the train with us. We also took that train during the spring for a birthday party. It was loud and fast and went “tool, toot!”
Erlan Bliss, Lawrence Livermore Lab physicist: I was born in Chicago at the Illinois Central hospital. We moved to Wisconsin and would visit friends and family in Chicago. I remember when I was 12 I took the train for the first time by myself to Aurora and had to change trains at Chicago Union Station. In those days it wasn’t a big deal, but sending a 12-year-old away on a train by himself wouldn’t happen today, especially with a change of trains in a huge station.KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA
Sara Bossatti, retired teacher: My husband and I traveled Europe by train from Romania through the Ukraine and ended in Krakow, Poland. It was beautiful with lovely accommodations. The customs border patrol would always come by and bang on our door to check passports. Those countries aren’t as open as western Europe. It was a great trip. We also took a train to Prague and Budapest. Trains in Europe run like well oiled clocks, so it’s very easy to get around that way.
