Students from San Ramon and Dublin were honored last week by the Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD) Board of Directors for their award-winning science fair projects.

The three students, all from the DSRSD service area which includes San Ramon and Dublin, were winners of the Excellence in Water Research award. The award, created in 2013 by 19 water and wastewater agencies in Contra Costa and Alameda counties, recognizes student projects in the world of water.

In the Junior division of the Contra Costa County Science & Engineering Fair, Arshia Mehta and Rishita Wairagade, were the first-place winners for the Excellence in Water Research award.

Mehta and Wairagade, seventh-graders at San Ramon’s Gale Ranch Middle School, explored a low-cost, potable water filter for their project.

Their teacher, Barbara Weisbrod, sponsored the project and received $100 from DSRSD.

Both girls received $250.

Neil Chatterjee, an eighth grader at Dublin’s Quarry Lane Middle School, was the runner-up for the award in the Junior division at the Alameda County Science & Engineering Fair.

Chatterjee’s project explored how organic detergents materially decrease the cost of water treatment.

His teacher, Johann Ripfel, sponsored the project and received $100. Chatterjee received $300.
