The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District is reminding residents to properly dispose of batteries rather than throwing them out with regular garbage following a Tuesday morning fire that erupted in a garbage truck.

Firefighters responded to the scene at approximately 7:20 a.m. Tuesday morning near the St. Joan of Arc Parish office on Norris Canyon Road, where flaming garbage had been removed from the truck and into a parking lot to prevent further damage to the vehicle “thanks to the quick action of the driver,” SRVFPD said in a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon.

While the fire was extinguished quickly and without further incident, SRVFPD is seeking to use the incident as a reminder about proper battery disposal.

“Batteries of any kind should not be thrown in the garbage,” SRVFPD officials said on Facebook.
