The Town of Danville is now seeking players and coaches for a new flag football league that marks the first all-girls opportunity for the sport in the town.
The league was announced by town officials on March 21, with recruitment now underway for girls in third through eighth grades. The youth league’s goal is to prepare young athletes to continue to pursue the sport as they progress through high school and college.
The league is a partnership between the town and NFL FLAG, the official flag football program associated with the NFL and the largest youth flag football organization in the country.
“The Town and NFL Flag are dedicated to creating more opportunities for female athletes to participate in youth sports and learn this growing sport.,” town officials said in last week’s announcement.
The league will focus on beginners who have not played the sport before, with weekly 45-minute games scheduled on Sundays from April 14 through June 9 — except for May 26 — at Osage Station Park. Practice time is scheduled an hour before game time.Â
Town staff are set to operate the league alongside volunteer coaches, who are also now being recruited. Coaches are required to complete fingerprinting, background checks, and mandated reporter certification ahead of the first game. Coaches who participate for the full season are eligible for a $40 credit.
