A jewelry representative leaving Stephen’s Fine Jewelry in the Livery shortly after 4 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon had his nylon bag of jewelry ripped from his arm.

“The 67-year-old white male was exiting the store and, when he approached his vehicle, he noticed a number of subjects in the car next to his,” said Sgt. Dan Hoffman of the Danville Police Department. He also noticed that the car was backed into the stall.

“He thought something was awry,” said Hoffman, “so he started back into the store. He was tackled from behind, and they were able to force from him the nylon bag containing an undisclosed amount of jewelry.”

The individual who had grabbed the bag escaped into the vehicle, and it was last seen going in a northbound direction. It was described as a four-door, older model Nissan Maxima with tinted windows. The license was a paper plate such as dealers use, reading “Shield.”

“We believe there to be three suspects,” said Hoffman. “One stayed in the vehicle.” One suspect was described by witnesses as a heavyset Hispanic male in a black hooded sweatshirt, according to reports.

The nylon shoulder strap was broken but the victim was not treated for any injuries, said Hoffman. No weapon was seen, and the suspects did not say anything.

“This is an unusual crime for the Town of Danville,” he noted. “The suspects are still outstanding, and we are in the process of following all leads.”

No similar crimes have been reported in local jurisdictions, said Hoffman. “It could be a random act.”

The crime occurred at 4:05 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 22.

  1. It sounds to me that this man was targeted. He did the right thing and did not approach the car when he felt something was wrong. As a business owner, and a woman, I’m always careful when leaving my place of business. There are routines that we find ourselves in that is easy for someone to track you by. My thoughts are that these people knew you were going to be where you went and planned to overcome you one way or another. Have someone accompany you on your drops or pick ups and carry a taser. The holidays are approaching and crime will increase, so do things differently. They may still want to target you.
